The fit-out of Sustrans’ Edinburgh office at Exchange Crescent created an inclusive and adaptable environment that reflects the organisation’s commitment to active and sustainable travel.
Planned around flexibility and collaboration, the interior provides a varied range of settings for different activities throughout the working day. Open-plan work areas are balanced with meeting rooms, quiet spaces and informal breakout settings, allowing employees to choose an environment suited to focused tasks, teamwork or conversation. Shared areas encourage interaction across the organisation, helping to strengthen communication and a sense of community.
A warm and approachable design moves away from a conventional corporate aesthetic. Natural textures, colour, planting and integrated graphics bring energy and identity to the interior, while clear planning and intuitive circulation create an accessible and welcoming experience for employees and visitors.
Sustainability and well-being informed the design approach, ensuring the space remained aligned with Sustrans’ purpose and values. Adaptable settings support evolving working patterns while promoting choice, movement and connection throughout the day.
The result is a practical yet characterful office that supports the way Sustrans operates, bringing its people together within an engaging environment that provides a clear physical expression of the organisation’s mission and culture.
